OUR ROAD...

**Spoiler alert** Aunty Lane is actually my mom. The name “Aunty Lanes Rocky Road” came about years ago, around 2010.

At the time my cousin owned a family run English Food Takeaway, and we (the family) were all addicted to my mom’s rocky Road.

So my cousin decided it was a no brainer to start selling it in the shop. Mom would make tray upon tray of the Rocky Road every week (much to the delight of my Dad who always copped for the washing up) and it ended up becoming hugely popular.

As the addiction spread outside the family, folks would be queuing up out the door of the shop and scrapping over slices whenever the word got out that “Aunty Lane” had made a fresh batch.

It was then, the name “AUNTY LANES ROCKY ROAD” kinda stuck, as folk would always call up or come in the shop and ask “Got any a your Aunty Lane Rocky Road?”

If we dial it back even further from 2010 to the early “noughties” Me dear ol’ mom originally started making Rocky Road because I had been moaning to her that Starbucks no longer made their version of the banging treat that I loved to devour at any given opportunity!

Anyways because of this she took it upon herself to make some to fill my snack void and in the process shut me up!

Her version was next level good!! She bought that mom magic to it that only they can. (I’m genuinely not being biased; this s**t was insane!!)

From then on wherever I worked it became a staple treat for my co-workers when it was my birthday and you had to bring the obligatory cakes in for everyone in the office. Folks smashed it and it was always the first thing to disappear under a trail of crumbs, marshmallows and icing sugar dust to everyone’s desk! Co-workers even began to order it for their own birthdays and other occasions.

Somehow though it NEVER occurred to us to actually try letting this be its own beast and see where it went…

However after a holiday in 2022 with friends that all changed.

We made some Rocky Road to take with us, for the husband of my ride or die childhood best-friend.

One afternoon we were all sat around the Braai , my friends husband cracks open his tray of Rocky Road and begrudgingly shared it out amongst our other friends.

One of the guys who wasn’t familiar with this snacks unassuming legacy took a piece. Seemingly more out of politeness than anything whilst saying “I’m not really one for Rocky Road”.

This statement was met with unanimous *scoffs* from the others in the group over their mouthfuls of Rocky Road “Nahhhh dude you gotta try this!!” as he bit into his slice the skies began to glow that brighter shade of blue and the late afternoon chorus of bird song became that much sweeter as his eyes widened and the party in his mouth began with the bountiful delights that this crunchy, chewy, velvety slice was bestowing upon him.

“F**k you should sell this sh**t, that’s Insane. I’m genuinely not one for Rocky Road but this is really incredible”

And so here we are today in 2023 a full 20 years after its initial conception, going balls to the wall and giving it a go… by throwing a modern spin on an old classic.

(Speaking of old classics here's a picture of "AUNTY LANE" herself aka me mom on her default setting of P****d.)
